Roofing & Roof Replacement FAQ
Everything you need to know about roof replacement, repairs, materials, and maintenance.
1How do I know if I need a new roof?
Signs you need a new roof include: shingles that are curling, cracking, or missing; granules in your gutters; daylight visible through roof boards; sagging roof deck; water stains on your ceiling; and a roof over 20-25 years old. We offer free roof inspections to assess your roof's condition and remaining lifespan.
2What roofing materials do you install?
We install a wide range of roofing materials including: architectural asphalt shingles (GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed), designer and luxury shingles, metal roofing (standing seam and metal shingles), flat roofing systems (TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen), slate roofing, and cedar shake. We help you choose the best material for your home, budget, and aesthetic preferences.
3How long does a roof replacement take?
Most residential roof replacements take 1-3 days depending on size, complexity, and weather. A typical 2,000 sq ft home can be completed in 1-2 days. Larger homes, multiple roof layers to remove, or complex roof designs may take 3-5 days. We provide a detailed timeline during your estimate and keep you updated throughout the project.
4What is the difference between asphalt and metal roofing?
Asphalt shingles are more affordable upfront ($3-6/sq ft installed), last 20-30 years, and offer many style options. Metal roofing costs more initially ($8-15/sq ft installed) but lasts 50+ years, is more energy efficient, and requires minimal maintenance. Metal is also more resistant to wind, fire, and impact damage. We help you weigh the pros and cons for your specific situation.
5What does GAF Master Elite mean?
GAF Master Elite is the highest certification from GAF, North America's largest roofing manufacturer. Only 2% of roofing contractors qualify. It means we meet strict licensing and insurance requirements, have a proven track record, and receive ongoing training. Most importantly, it allows us to offer GAF's best warranties, including the 50-Year Golden Pledge limited warranty.
6Do you offer roof repairs or just replacements?
We offer both roof repairs and full replacements. Repairs are appropriate for localized damage like missing shingles, small leaks, or flashing issues. If your roof has widespread damage, multiple leaks, or is nearing the end of its lifespan, replacement is often more cost-effective. We provide honest assessments and never recommend replacement when repair is sufficient.
7What warranty do you offer on roofing?
We offer a 10-year workmanship warranty on all roofing installations. Additionally, our GAF Master Elite certification allows us to offer GAF's enhanced warranties including the 50-Year Golden Pledge warranty which covers materials and workmanship. Manufacturer warranties vary by product and range from 25 years to lifetime coverage.
8Can I stay in my home during roof replacement?
Yes, you can typically stay in your home during roof replacement. There will be noise from hammering and power tools during work hours (usually 7 AM - 6 PM). We protect your landscaping, cover outdoor furniture, and clean up daily. We recommend keeping pets inside and parking vehicles away from the work area.
9How do you handle old shingles and debris?
We completely remove all old roofing materials down to the deck. This includes shingles, underlayment, flashing, and any damaged decking. Debris is loaded directly into our dump trailers or dumpsters. We perform daily cleanup and a final inspection with magnetic sweepers to collect any stray nails. Disposal is included in your quote.
10What is roof decking and when does it need replacement?
Roof decking (also called sheathing) is the wooden boards or plywood beneath your shingles. It may need replacement if it's rotted, water-damaged, or has soft spots. We inspect the decking during installation and only replace sections that are damaged. Decking replacement is priced per sheet and we'll show you any damaged areas before proceeding.
11Do you install ice and water shield?
Yes, we install ice and water shield membrane in critical areas prone to ice dams and water infiltration. This includes valleys, around skylights, chimneys, vents, and along eaves. In cold climates like PA and NJ, this protection is essential and often code-required. It provides an extra layer of waterproofing to prevent costly damage.
12What ventilation do you install with a new roof?
Proper attic ventilation is crucial for roof longevity. We install balanced ventilation systems including ridge vents, soffit vents, and when needed, powered vents. Good ventilation prevents heat buildup in summer, ice dams in winter, and moisture problems year-round. We assess your current ventilation and recommend improvements as needed.
13Can you match my existing roof for repairs or additions?
We make every effort to match existing shingles for repairs and additions. We can often source matching or very similar shingles from manufacturers. Keep in mind that weathered shingles may not perfectly match new ones even if the same product. For the best blend, we strategically place repairs in less visible areas when possible.
14Do you install skylights or solar panels?
Yes, we can install skylights during roof replacement or as a standalone project. Properly installed skylights add natural light and curb appeal. For solar panels, we work with certified solar installers and ensure the roof is properly prepared with appropriate flashings. If you're planning solar, let us know as it affects material and warranty considerations.
15What happens if it rains during my roof replacement?
We closely monitor weather forecasts and never start work when rain is imminent. If weather changes unexpectedly, we have protocols to quickly protect your home with tarps and temporary weatherproofing. We won't leave your home exposed overnight. In most cases, we can complete installation quickly enough to avoid weather issues.
